Nuapada: Jadu Bag of Larka village in Boden block of Nuapada district committed suicide on Tuesday. He died at the Mission Hospital of Khariar while undergoing treatment.
Jadu’s family members said he committed suicide being disheartened by failure of crop due to lack of rain. The rainfall in Boden block was 31% less in June, 55% less in July and 27% less in August, which drastically affected the crops. By the end of August, the crops in the field had already turned grey.
“My husband had taken Rs 30,000 as loan from private sources to invest in agriculture. The crop failure forced him to migrate to Mumbai, but he could not earn much there to repay the loan. So, he returned distressed and committed suicide after a few days,” said Jadu’s wife Dula.
Crops in almost all agriculture lands of Larka village have failed this year. Most farmers have incurred loan to spend in agriculture. Some of them have already taken advance from labour brokers (Sardars) to migrate to brick kilns in Hyderabad, Mumbai and other cities. “The situation is worst this year as the drought occurred consecutively,” said villagers
Reportedly, Bag consumed poison on Monday and was rushed to a private hospital where he succumbed to his suicidal attempt.
Following the incident, BJP and Congress workers blocked NH-353 for hours after which the Khariar Additional Tehsildar reached the spot and controlled the situation.
The district administration on the spot declared Rs 10,000 compensation from Red Cross and assured a house under the Biju Pakka Ghar Yojana.
