Cuttack: In what could be just the tip of the ice-berg of a major scam, the Cuttack district administration intercepted a goods train while transporting sand illegally from Nergundi station here on Friday night.
Acting on the information by Tangi tehsildar, Cuttack collector and other administrative officials and police conducted a surprise raid and detained sand that was being illegally transported to Uttar Pradesh.
“After getting information, I had asked Revenue Inspector to conduct a probe and later found that sand was being accumulated at Nergundi and then loaded on to goods train,” said Tehsildar Tangi-Choudwar Abhinash Rout.
Rout further stated that permission of government is required for transportation of minerals to other states. We have demanded the agency to produce necessary documents so that further course of action can be decided.
According to reports, the district administration and police raided the goods train at Nirgundi station at around 8 pm on Friday after getting information of illegal sand transportation to other state. Loading the sand from CDA area in Cuttack, the company without having permission from railway authorities and other necessary documents for transporting sand to other state unloaded the sand on 50-60 bogies of the goods train. The raid was conducted while six bogies were filled with sand and loading operation was underway on other bogies.
“I had information about illegal transportation of sand on goods train by the mafias. With help of SDPO after informing collector, sub-collector and ADM we raided the train. After talking with the person, who was transporting the sand, we came to know that they do not have permission to transport minor mineral to any other state. It needs to be verified how they were transporting the sand to other state,” said Tangi-Choudwar Tehsildar Abinash Rout.
