Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday condoled the death of four kids who drowned in Kolab Reservoir near Lamtaput in Koraput district and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for kin of the deceased.
A press release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said, “CM Naveen expressed grief over drowning incident of four children in river Kolab and announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for nearest of kin of deceased.”
On Monday, four kids including two siblings died while taking bath in Kolab Reservoir here near Lamptaput. The children, all in the age group below nine years, are residents of Parjakhudbi village.
The deceased children were identified as siblings Susant Bhoi and Laxmi Bhoi, Sanjay Bhoi and Sabita Bhoi.
According to a press release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the state government would provide Rs 4 lakh compensation each for the kin of the deceased kids.
Notably, four children including two siblings of Parjakhudbi village died after drowning in Kolab Reservoir yesterday.
The deceased have been identified as Susanta Bhoi (2), Laxmi Bhoi (9), Sabita Majhi (8) and Sanjay Bhoi (9).
According to sources, Susanta was the first to be swept by the current, following which Sabita rushed to save the two-year-old.
However, Sabita too, was pulled by the flow and drowned. On noticing the two children struggling, Laxmi and Sanjay jumped into water to rescue their friends, but all of them were swept away.
The incident occurred when the children, belonging to three families from Parajakhudubi village were playing on the river bank. They had accompanied their parents, who were tilling the farms nearby.
Locals had rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies from the river.
The local police has registered a case and has started investigation into the incident.
The bodies of the deceased had been sent to Koraput District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for autopsy.
